Bill grew up in Lamesa, Texas, and graduated from Lamesa High School, where he was a proud member of the marching band. He went on to attend McMurry College in Abilene, Texas, where he continued his involvement in the band. It was there that he met the love of his life, Lucy Kennedy, a fellow band member. During their college years, the McMurry band had the opportunity to travel to Europe, an experience that helped spark a lifelong love of travel they would share together.
Bill and Lucy were married on July 13, 1956, and shared 66 wonderful years together. Over the course of their marriage, they traveled to all 50 states and more than 25 countries, collecting cherished memories and keepsakes along the way.
After graduating from college, Bill began a 31-year career in education at Bowie Elementary School in Abilene, where he taught sixth grade. In addition to teaching, he coached boys’ football, basketball, and track throughout his career. He retired from teaching at the age of 55.
In retirement, Bill devoted himself to farming his 40-acre property in Hawley, Texas, where he grew, cut, and baled hay for local cattle and horse ranches. He also pursued his passions for woodworking and stained-glass artistry. He built a workshop in his backyard and created numerous beautiful pieces. His craftsmanship can be seen in the stained-glass windows and furniture he made for Elmwood West United Methodist Church in Abilene, where he was a longtime member.
Bill deeply loved his family. He is survived by his son, Randy Temple and wife Dorena of Dallas, Texas; and his daughter, Vicki Wilson and husband Bobby of Abilene, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to Zack Wilson of Abilene, Alex Temple and wife Kacie of Houston, and Stephanie Worley and husband Brandt of Brock, Texas. He also treasured his four great-grandchildren: Braxten, Brylinn, Brannen, and Bronsen Worley. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nancy Cox of Carrollton, Texas.
For the past four years, Bill was a resident of Windcrest Health and Rehabilitation in Abilene. His family expresses their sincere gratitude for the compassionate care he received.
A memorial service will be held on March 28, 2026, at Elmwood West United Methodist Church, 1302 S. Pioneer Drive in Abilene. A luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
