Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 5-7:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home 5701 US Highway 277S. in Abilene. Graveside services will be held at Tye Cemetery on Saturday at 10:00 AM with his cousin, Pastor Kody Smith officiating.
Gene was born on September 18, 1940, in Abilene, Texas. He was the youngest of three children born to the late Billy Patterson Moore and Inez (Crawford) Moore. He grew up in Tye where he spent much of his time with his siblings, cousins, and neighborhood friends riding horses and having a fun childhood. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1959. He married Betty Marie Staton on October 20, 1961, in Snyder, Texas. They had two children and early on the family moved to Arlington following Gene’s career. He began working with what was then known as Burlington Northern and retired after 40 plus years from United Pacific Railroad. He took pride in his work.
After retirement Gene and Betty moved to Merkle. They attended Tye Baptist Church. After Betty’s passing, he moved back to Burleson. He always kept active and engaged with others. From his special coffee shop group, the senior center, family reunions and numerous other activities he enjoyed the company of others. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and being on the dance floor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Moore and brother, Billy Granville Moore.
Gene is survived by his two children and their spouses, Kelly and Robert “Bobby” Rothwell of Conroe, Texas and Greg and Deborah Moore of Mansfield; his sister, Dona Mae Griffith of Tye; grandchildren, Cody Rothwell, Kelsey Norrholm, Garrett Moore and Grant Moore; great-grandchildren, Elly June Norrholm and Joey Rose Norrholm; several nieces and nephews; and a large group of cousins.
