Dorothy Houston, 85, died Sunday May 1, 2011, at a local medical center after surviving brain cancer for almost 30 years. Dorothy was born on October 5, 1925 in Holland, TX. Dorothy married Fred Wallace from Brenham TX in 1940and later married Jessie B. Houston. Dorothy gave birth to 12 beautiful children; she lived in Anson, Beeville, Victoria, Odessa, San Angelo and finally Abilene Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and her children Freddie Wallace, Willie James Wallace, Sam Edward Wallace, Floyd Wallace, and Danny Carl Houston.
She leaves to cherish her memory 7 children, Lois Stewart- Myers, Teddie Wallace, Dorothy Harris Patricia Dancer, Jessie Houston Jr., Johnny Houston and Charlotte Houston. Dorothy was a proud grandmother of 35 grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren with a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Dorothy was a home health care provider for over 40 years and took pride in her work as she had a passion for caring for people. Caring for others brought her great joy and she always welcomed people in need to a meal and a bed, there were no strangers at her house, and she always gave what she had. Grandmother loved her faith and enjoyed reading the bible and going to conventions. She loved to travel and going to the ocean was one of her favorite things to do. She once visited Hawaii and loved it. She went to see Diana Ross and the Temptations and loved listening to Al Green, R. Kelly and even watching LL Cool J lick his lips! She was fun and made our lives fun. If any of us ever had a boyfriend he quickly became “Our” boyfriend. She shared her life with all of us and lived some of her life through our accomplishments.
Grandmother you always appreciated life during the good times bad times and through the pain your illness brought you. You were a very, very strong woman and we are all stronger because of that. Not many women can say they gave birth to twins weighing almost ten pounds each. As a mother or grandmother you were many things and you had a gift of making all of us feel “special” like we were your favorite child or grandchild. You loved every single one of us and we can all cherish that love and the memory of love you left with us. Each of us can recall a special meal, barbeque or party that we had, and those fun fishing trips and fish fries were many of our precious childhood memories. Especially going to the hamburger stand for a big hamburger which you managed to find in every city you lived in.
Further let us not forget the family reunions that you never were tired of having and how excited you were to have everyone together eating, drinking, talking, dancing, playing cards, dominos, singing and having fun. But most of all grandmother you made us laugh, you even laughed about out living your doctors and made fun of them saying you only had a short time to live and saying you were on death row again! We will continue to smile and laugh when we think of you.
Grandmother, although you will no longer be here with us we will keep you in our hearts and memories forever!
