Lt. Col. Dwight Deming was born November 10, 1923 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of 9 children born to Morell and Ida Roof Deming. He was an All-State Defensive lineman for Weatherford High School in Oklahoma and won a football scholarship to Oklahoma A&M. He went to college for the fall semester of 1941. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Army Air Corp on January 25, 1942 and became a B-24 pilot. During training he met his wife, Joel B Hankins, and they married in Scottsbluff, Nebraska August 14, 1943. Dwight flew 25 bombing missions over France and Germany between October 24, 1943 and May 8, 1944. He was awarded 2 purple hearts. He continued his distinguished military career as a pilot until retirement in 1969.
Upon retirement from the military Dwight and Joel with their two sons built their own house on Lake Buchanan. Dwight would continue building houses for other people until moving to Ft. Worth in 1989. At 90 years of age he helped his son Randy build a house in Callahan County. At 87 years of age he bowled a 269. He loved to bowl but his favorite sports were roofing, plumbing, electrical work, and ditch digging.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. His beloved wife of 64 years passed away in 2008. He is survived by his sons; Gerry Deming and wife Henrietta of Montgomery, Texas; Randy Deming and wife Jeanne of Abilene; grandchildren Alison and Chris Kennie of Houston; Brian and Allison Deming of Diamondhead, Miss; Amy Deming of Madison, Wisconsin; Catherine Joel and Lee Rosenbaum of Abilene; Andrew Deming of Wichita Falls; step-grandchildren Rebecca and Tony Walton of Logan, Utah; Heidi Wilson and Ali Bradshaw of Bennett, Colorado. There are also 7 great grandchildren: Adeline, Henry, Savannah, Sidney, Jackson, Luke and Everett Joel.
Dwight was a man of faith but instead of talking about it he simply lived it: Patient, Strong, Caring, Brave, Generous, and Gentle. He never raised his voice. He never said a bad word. He served his God and his country. He gave his life and now he has found it.
The family would like to thank the staff, residents, and volunteers of Wisteria Assisted Living, Kindred Hospice, and Oldham Lane Church of Christ for going beyond the call of duty in their care for Dwight.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 10:15am at Wisteria Place Chapel, 3202 S. Willis.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your favorite charity or church.
