

Hazel Gaines Chapman, 95, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at her residence in Abilene surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 11:30a.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Rev. Felicia Hopkins and Rev. Robert P. Kelley officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6 to 8p.m. at the funeral home.
Hazel was born January 5, 1919 to the late Felix and Lillie Marrs Gaines in Voss, Texas. She graduated from Coleman High School, and married A.E. “Jack” Chapman on December 9, 1941 in Coleman, Texas.
Hazel moved to Abilene in 1947 and was employed as a bookkeeper for 40 years with Chapman Lumber Company, her family owned lumber yard in Abilene. Her husband passed away in March of 1991 and the lumber yard closed in April of 1992. Hazel later opened her own business in the former location of Chapman Lumber Company and called it Hazel’s House of “Fine Junk”. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Jack; her parents; her sister, Lera Gaines Lauder; three brothers, Dr. Foster Gaines, Maynard Gaines, and Dennis Gaines.
Survivors include two sons, Lynn Chapman and wife, Sandy and Larry Chapman and wife, Susan; a daughter, Linda Chapman all of Abilene; grandchildren, Nicole Ludlow and husband, Steve, Kristi Henderson and husband, Dennis, Chandra Chapman, and Cody Chapman and wife, Megan; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Todd, Maleah Todd, Kyle Henderson, Kaleb Henderson, and Reese Chapman.
The family appreciates Hendrick Hospice and Chris McDonald and the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic for the compassionate care given to our mother. We would also like to thank Mary Martinez, Naomi Sansom, and Norma Carillo for their loving care. We are also indebted to Deb Gonzales for the special attention she provided.
