

Jewel May Caffey went home to be with our Lord on Monday, April 22, 2013. She was born on December 14, 1928, in Dona Ana, NM, to O. A. and Lila Clark. She grew up on the Clark homestead in New Mexico. She got her bachelor’s degree in education from New Mexico Highlands University in 1952 and her master’s degree in education from Abilene Christian College in 1956. Jewel met the love of her life, Mitch, while attending ACC. They were married for 56 years.
Jewel loved learning and teaching. Through the years, Jewel taught business, home economics, typing, and math in junior high school, as well as teaching elementary classes in New Mexico and many Bible classes throughout her life. She taught in schools in New Mexico and Texas for 26 years.
Jewel loved to spend time with family. She traveled extensively during her lifetime. She enjoyed camping with family and friends. She had a keen interest in ministry and worked with the Sojourners for years. She enjoyed working with her husband in Vienna with European Christian College. She was very involved at any Church of Christ that she attended. She enjoyed traveling with the Prime Timers and was an avid gardener while living in San Angelo. She greatly enjoyed times walking with family and playing games with friends and family. She took great joy in cooking for family.
Jewel is survived by her husband, Mitch; children: Gerry and Dottie Caffey of Austin, Vivian and Mark Ayers of Haltom City, and Alan and Linda Caffey of Abilene; grandchildren: Kendra Caffey, Chris and Tiffany Moran, Michelle Prosoco, Jessie Ayers, Christine and Derek Bowman, and Daniel and Jessie Caffey; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Shania, Kayla, Caitlyn, Natalie, Kieley, Kirsley, and Wyatt; brothers: John and Elma Clark, Charlie and Nida Clark, O. A. and Linda Clark, and Dan and Laronna Clark; sisters: Opal, Mary and A. B Copeland, and Dottie; in-laws: Tina and Ron.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, O. A. and Lila Clark; child: Edwin Warren Caffey; brothers: James and Warren; sisters: Ruby and Lila; in-laws: Steve, Fred, Bill, Gilbert, and Inez.
Visitation will be at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013. Her funeral will be held at the University Church of Christ auditorium on Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, 5701 Hwy 277 South.
