

Sergeant Major John Robert Landry Sr. (Ret.), 82, of Abilene, TX passed away on the morning of March 23, 2016. John was born on January 23, 1934 to Wilbur and Bernadette Landry of Granby, Massachusetts. John was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Landry and his son, John Landry, Jr. He is survived by his three daughters, Marjorie and husband, Tim Little of Bakersfield, CA, Sandra and husband, Robert Leggett of Merkel, TX, and Jessica and husband, Marshall Turnbull of Abilene, TX. He was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
John enlisted in the U.S. Army in April, 1951. He lead an illustrious and well decorated career as a Green Beret, earning The Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with Valor device, Purple Heart, and Soldier's Medal along with a multitude of other decorations. John has been and upstanding member of this community since taking a position at Hardin-Simmons University Orienteering program. He took great joy in being a part of Boy Scout Troop 3. John most recently retired from Taylor County Juvenile Justice Center in 2012 as a community service officer.
John will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Muriel on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 3:00p.m. in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Calling hours will be held from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. on Sunday March 27, 2016 at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials of John should be made to Boy Scouts of America, The American Heart Association, or the Alzheimer's Association.
