Marilyn was born in Waco, Texas to the late Charles Elton and Bessie Lee Mansfield Money on October 7, 1930. She graduated from Waco High School in 1946 and entered Abilene Christian College at the age of 15 after accelerated promotion during grade school. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from ACC in 1950 at the age of 19. Marilyn loved English and wanted to study Journalism; however, ACC did not have a journalism major at that time, so she followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a teacher.
She married Bill G. Scott on June 23, 1951 in Waco, Texas. They were married 52 years until her husband’s death in 2003.
Marilyn started her career by teaching elementary school. In 1970 she attended the University of Texas at Austin for certification as a teacher for visually handicapped students. She later earned a Master’s degree in Education, then continued her higher education with an additional 30 hours beyond her Master’s degree. The highlight of her career was the personal instruction she was able to provide to the blind students in Abilene. She expanded her service as a teacher to include all the physically and mentally handicapped students in the district. She served as a public school teacher for 39 years, beginning in Loraine, Texas and retiring from the Abilene Public School District in the late 1980’s.
Marilyn studied architectural styles, and enjoyed looking at houses and gardens. She earned her Real Estate sales license and worked during the summer for a few years as a real estate agent.
Marilyn was a people person that loved to socialize and enjoyed entertaining; often throwing elaborate parties in her home for church members and friends. Marilyn and her late husband were charter members of South 11th and Willis Street Church of Christ in Abilene. She loved her church home and friends there – the church was her life.
Marilyn also enjoyed the theater, music, and singing. She believed in preserving the arts and wanted to share the joy of classic films and beautiful music with all those around her. Her support of the Historic Paramount Theater was contagious and she was well known for hosting “Paramount Parties”, where she would invite all of the church and her extended group of friends to enjoy the classic film series.
Marilyn received great joy from time spent with her family, friends and her recently adopted animals. She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bill; and her sister, Katherine Money Elder.
Survivors include her two daughters: Tiffany Scott Freeman and husband, Reid of Dallas, and Chandra Scott Corse and husband, Kenneth of Pampa; grandchildren: Robert Scott “Rob” Wyde and Reid Alexander Filip Wyde of Dallas, Stanford Gray Corse, and Etta Rose Corse of Pampa; niece Courtenay Elder, nephews Keith and Blake Elder, and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
