A celebration of Martha’s life is scheduled on Monday, February 21, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM, with visitation prior to the service from 10:00-11:00. Interment will follow at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home and Garden of Memories.
She was born on December 17, 1935, to Charles and Martha “Dewald” Schrader in Copperas Cove, Texas, one of five children. She was a proud Texan, Texas born and bred, and happy to proclaim that fact to everyone.
Martha was mother of two children, Vicky and Patrick, and she was their strength and support. She said what she meant and meant what she said, and her strong will was unquestioned. She sang in the church choir and later attended Elmwood Methodist Church. She moved to Minnesota in the early 50’s, and graduated high school in Brainard, Minnesota. She worked for many years in the local pharmacy, and she was happiest dressed in comfortable clothes enjoying life in the Minnesota outdoors. She was indeed a country girl, and enjoyed splitting wood, and driving a tractor. She taught her son to become a hunter and fisherman and they created loving memories of fishing and hunting trips together. Martha had a special technique for hunting grouse, and was a good shot! Martha and Vicky spent time together fishing on the pontoon and with the help of Vicky’s family cutting and putting up the wood for the winter heating, plus having BBQ’s together. Her fried chicken was her cooking specialty. Her favorite indoor sport was bowling, and any league was fortunate to have her. She accumulated an impressive array of trophies for her outstanding skills.
She was blessed to have a special angel in her life in the last few years, and this angel is named Grace. She was her faithful and constant companion, and Grace gave Martha a soft, plush dog that Martha named Sherman, and Sherman became her comfort. Martha always had Sherman tucked under her left arm whether awake or sleeping, so during the times that Grace or her children could not be with her, Sherman was the strength she needed.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Bobby Jean and Charlotte; brother Verlin; and sister-in-law Sophie.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are son Patrick Bachman; daughter Vicky Bachman; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother Ronald Schrader and sister-in-law Sharon Schrader.
