
Vernon R. Spivey, 89, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, in Rendon, Texas. Graveside services will be at 10:00a.m., Friday, February 15, 2013 in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St., Abilene. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8p.m. at the funeral home.
Vernon was born May 21, 1923 in Cisco, TX to J.P. and Annie Mae White Spivey. He married Dora Jane Searcy in Dallas, TX on June 7, 1945. Vernon served his country in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII in the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 14. He worked for Rose & Sons Construction and BF Horn Construction Company’s in Abilene and was Post Commander of the VFW in Ft. Worth. Vernon was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Jane Spivey; his second wife, Madge; a son, Rod Spivey; brothers, Cotton & Buddy Spivey; sisters, Virginia Spivey Haver, and Glenora Naomi Spivey Searcy and her husband, Calvin Searcy.
Survivors include his sons, Roy Spivey and wife, Kathy of Abilene, Jerry Spivey and wife, Jodie of Burleson, and Billy Spivey and wife, Jackie of Abilene; a daughter, Carolyn Spivey Rains Ryan of Burleson; a sister, LaVerne Spivey McGee of Grapevine; nine grandchildren; and fifiteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice, 1682 Hickory St., Abilene, TX 79601.
