Marian Silvester Mohler of Akron, Ohio passed away at Rockynol on December 23, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 76 years, Robert E. Mohler; son Roger Mohler (LaVerne) of Akron; daughters Jocelyn Lance (James) of Richmond, Virginia and Janice Grove (James) of Akron; coast-to-coast grandchildren, Gregory Mohler (Carol) of Atlanta, Georgia; Eric Mohler (Melanie) of Lake Villa, Illinois; Kevin Mohler of Portland, Oregon; Brian Lance (Anne) of Cincinnati, Ohio; Stephanie Lance Merchent (Timothy) and Christopher Lance (Melissa) of Richmond; Jeffrey Grove (Kathleen) of Avon Lake, Ohio; Jason Grove (Morgan) of Washington, DC; step-grandson Ernie Tarle of Akron; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Marian was born on January 1, 1915, in Birchwood, Wisconsin to John and Elizabeth Silvester. Her mother died from childbirth complications one year later. Marian and her late sister Ruth were then raised by their grandmother and great-aunt in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, from where she treasured fond memories such as ice skating on a neighbor's pond.
When she was 15, Marian and her sister moved to Akron to live with their father where she attended Central High School. A photograph of 17-year old Marian was featured in an Akron Beacon Journal article introducing the dial telephone. Double majoring in Art and English, she was graduated at the top of her class from the University of Akron in 1936.
Marian was an accomplished artist and had several showings at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Rockynol Retirement Community. Her paintings are now proudly displayed in the homes of her children and grandchildren. She was a photographer who developed her own photographs and painted many of them as color film was very expensive. She played the piano; was an accomplished seamstress and made her own clothes as well as those of her children. She made draperies, tiled floors, hung wallpaper and re-finished furniture. She was also the family hairdresser/barber for many years.
Marian was a true Renaissance woman in intellect and ability, who chose to focus on her family rather than pursue a career utilizing her many talents. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 2:00 PM in the Myrna and Hugh Porter Chapel at Rockynol, 1150 W. Market Street in Akron. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service at 3358 Ridgewood Road, Fairlawn, Ohio 44333.
