Jacob Orrie-Stephen Hagerty “Jake” age 37 of Battle Creek passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024 under the loving care of his family. He was born October 9, 1986 in Marshall the son of Stephen Hagerty and Julianna Chopper.
Jacob graduated from Marshall High School in 2005. He spent the next two decades of his life making an indelible impression on those around him. He was especially well-known in the Marshall area where he would meander downtown talking with whoever would listen. He was often seen at the fountain or hobbling down the sidewalks.
Those around him knew that he had a giving spirit, even when he didn’t have much to give. What he could always give was of himself. He held many jobs where he was a valuable employee, but he thrived working with developmentally and physically disabled residents at local group homes. He would speak proudly of “my boys” whom he was passionate about serving. You could see how he loved them by how he advocated for their comfort and recreation. His pride was in being with them and sacrificing his time to take extra shifts or volunteering to work on holidays. He had a way of connecting with them on a personal level rather than as an employee. This was the essence of Jake. The ability to connect with people who needed it the most.
Jake leaves behind a great deal of people who will never forget him; family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, or people who have only met him once. There are too many to name, but they were all important to him. No matter how big or small the relationship anyone had with Jake, he remembered it. He will be especially missed by Chuck, his dearly loved rescue dog.
Jake was preceded in death by his Grandparents, Donald O. and Betty J. Hagerty, Otis W. and Margaret A. Myers, Sister, Stepani Danielle Hagerty, Nephew Asher J. Sullivan, Aunt, Regina Layne, Cousins, Jennifer Hagerty, Joseph Hagerty and Richard Mason.
