Thankful to have met such a beautiful soul. He was there for me in my most troubled times. His presence and his office was a safe place for many students especially myself.

Sorry to hear of Paul's passing. We have grown to be good friends the last 2 years, going to estate sales and auctions. I will miss him greatly.

I always remember Butch at the MSU tailgate parties, laughing and telling stories about his students.  Paula, you will always be my 'sister'  and Donna and I are full of sorrow for you at your loss.  We will keep you in our prayers and will definitely be there for the service.

I met Paul at MSU when we were half-crazed by youth and the times we lived in. We became close friends, cemented during our months-long adventure hitchhiking through Europe and Turkey in 1973. We squatted in a London flat, slept on a rooftop in Paris, swayed to an oompah band at the Hofbrau Haus, camped on a beach on Patmos, body-surfed in the Black Sea, ascended the Citadel in Ankara, and spent a night in jail on the Turkish Riviera. I could go on and on. Others have written beautifully about Paul's heart-on-his-sleeve passion for the people and ideas he cared about. His was often the loudest and best voice in the room, as he regaled his listeners with enhanced and hysterical stories. But once, from out of the blue, he whispered, "I just love my kids, man." The hard, the soft. I was tempted to write that Paul's death has left a void in the world. Certainly, to those of us who loved him, our hearts are broken.  He cared about us so deeply. And we, him. But his departure has not left a void in the wider world. As I read the wonderful tributes here from his former students and their families, his lifelong friends, pictures of the adoring grandfather, I was struck by how Paul has left this world such a better place and people better people. I love you, man. Rest in peace.

Dear Raechel and Namon (and sister Paula), I am so sorry to hear the news about your father’s (and brother’s) passing. Your dad and I were very close. He is my son Nathan‘s godfather. Your dad and I saw The Who together in Detroit right after the Cincinnati stampede. I also went and saw BB King with him at State Theater in Kalamazoo. Paul and I first met in 1975 at Starr Commonwealth and he became one of my closest supporters. He taught me so much in my early days there and we socialized a ton. When we needed to have exterminators for what they called powder post beetles at my farmhouse (I had installed barn wood) and they had to tent and exterminate the whole building, the kids and I stayed with Paul and his first wife Debbie at their house for a few days. I remember a trip to buy music and I talked Paul into buying Pink Floyd‘s Wish You Were Here along with his choice of a Rory Gallagher album. Now I wish (obviously) that Paul were here. When I wanted to build a fort for my kids, Paul helped me move and install a telephone pole. No small feat! My son Addam told me Paul helped him through some tough times by buying him a bunch of books and telling him he could never get into trouble reading.  I would see him a couple times a year and we were always happy to be with each other. I loved your father and miss him very much. A good friend of mine Bob Randels from the Food Bank of south-central Michigan died recently and his service is the same day as your father’s and I have committed to do the sound and the live stream for that etc. etc. It’s over in Augusta and I am there from 11 to 5. I’m going to try to figure out a way to do both. Again, I am so sorry. I just saw the obituary in the Marshall Advisor. If there’s anything I can do to help the family in anyway, please let me know. Shed a lot of tears since Saturday. Riding up a chair lift on Tuesday I cried some more, then realized what a run we had..... Kindergarten til the end.  One continuous friendship.  65 years, Scholz. We didn't make it to 70 for our free skiing, but we came close. From 2 little kids to 2 old guys - what a friend, what a classmate, what a teammate, what laughs, what concern for each other. We took turns laughing at each other, and we took turns counseling each other.  And of course we fed off each other sharing our same political views. We didn't get to spring training, we didn't get around to our trout fishing.  My world just got smaller and a little more lonely; but what a good, long ride we had.  Thanks, Scholz

I grew up across Loon Lake from Butch and along with Donny Shaw share many happy memories of our years around the neighborhood. We lost contact over the years but I still wept when I heard that Paul had passed. He was a great friend and will always be in my memory! So sorry for your loss.

Butchie was a dear friend.   His mother, Betty worked at AC Spark Plug with my dad, Walter.  In early 64, we moved to Fenton, and she told Butch to find me and "become my friend" at LFHS.  We shared every adolescent adventure together.   He was bright, progressive and a problem solver.   We always talked in the morning,  before Michigan played MSU.    We hitchhiked around Canada, France and Morocco together.  He was a risk taker when we were on a caper and a fearless defender of friends and  loved ones.    We visited and talked often about important things like parenting,   traveling and aging.   He was a swimmer, a scrounger, a pitcher, a hoopster and a wide-body lineman.   He was an excellent skier-snow and water.   He challenged me on my wild assumptions.   He grounded me when impulsive ideas raged.   He was a solid man with all the right values.  Like his mother, he collected treasures hoping to find their new owners.    He loved his family and set high expectations for them.   I am reading his book now, and clearly remember so many stories about our shared travels.   He was so motivated by love for  his grand daughter.  I loved him and will miss him dearly.    

I had the privilege to work as a teacher under Paul's guidance. He was a fantastic mentor. I learned a great deal, as he shared his wealth of knowledge. Paul made himself available to students and staff. He was easy to talk with. He shared his stories but was a great listener too. We often talked about our wayward dogs, who wandered from home but found their way back. We celebrated Spartan wins and bragged about our own children. He was more than a boss, he was a friend. He will be missed by many. 

Mr. Scholz was the first and only principal i had that made me feel like he genuinely cared about us students. If you had an accomplishment, he was congratulating you. Had a bad day, he was willing to listen to you vent. He was his students biggest fan. I remember him standing in the hallways with a smile on his face and always talking with us students. You never once judged us students and that was nice, you always said “we we’re such great kids”. He made an impact in my life and many others. You will be missed Mr. Scholz. Rest easy ♥️

Paul was a wonderful friend and mentor to hundreds of Starr’s children and was admired by his colleagues and friends for his big hearted approach to life. His enthusiasm and passion for helping others was remarkable and he would always be there for those in need. It is wonderful to see all the heartfelt tributes to him. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all of Paul’s family and friends. He will be missed by so many.

My favorite memories of Paul are with the basketball team.  We spent a lot of time with the teams over the years.  

I also got a kick out of him trying to coach our graduate who was a boxer how to box before his match.  

Finally, the most powerful memory I have of Paul is when a boy came in whose father had just passed away.  He wrapped the boy up in a big hug and just held him while he wept.  It was just what he needed- comfort.  I hope the memories that are being shared can be like his arms wrapping around you to give you comfort.

Mr. Sholz your going to be truly missed by so many people. Thank you for being there for my family and helping us all graduate. If it wasnt for your help and guidance my brothers would have never been able to graduate. I want to Take this time to tell you what a Wonderful Principal you were. I will cherish my senior year photos and all my memories I have graduating and attending Northwest Alternative High School. Class of 2007 was the best!!! My heart is so heavy and Im so sad by this news. You were Great!!!

All three of my children graduated from NW Alternative- two when Mr. Scholz was principal there. His guidance , support and strength with the kids was totally amazing. I know a lot of kids would not have had that chance if it wasn't for him. He was not only a great principal, mentor , but also an amazing person and became a friend to my boys. Thoughts and prayers to family at this time...you will be greatly missed.

So sorry to hear of your loss Paula, Namon, Raechel and Matt.  Your brother, father & grandfather was an awesome person and a great friend.  I will never forget the MSU games we attended together and the fun we shared when tailgating.  Paul was a great story teller and was so proud of his family and friends.  He loved to help others and see others become successful in life.  Will never forget the 16 years we were able to coach the Northwest Alternative H.S. Teams together and all the fun and positive experiences this created for us, the teachers and students involved.  Paul made me a better person and made my life more fulfilling.  He was like a brother and will miss him dearly, but all the positive memories will be always remembered.  Sending my prayers, thoughts and love to the family. 

Paul- Scholzie - Deacon: So sad to hear of your passing. Your zest for life will, certainly, go with you as you enter our afterlife. I will not forget our great times spent together when we were younger. You were a great football player, in high school, and it is no surprise you were admired by students you worked with in education.
Personally, I will miss you forever.
As you go into God's hands, keep all around you laughing and listening, just like you always have.

I wouldn’t have graduated, or even made it through high school without this man being my principle. He did so much for his students to help all of us succeed and become amazing people for those of us who were always looked down upon 

You believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.  You pushed me harder than anyone ever had because you always said you knew I was better than I saw myself and if I wouldn’t push myself you would push me. And you did just that. I was hard to handle but you always could calm me down. I remember getting suspended and you were more worried that I didn’t eat my lunch that day so you called my dad, and we went to steak and shake and then you dropped me off at home so my dad wouldn’t have to leave work. You were always helping someone, always trying to lessen the load for someone. You truly are still to this day, 7 years later, one of my hero’s. 

I wouldn't be the man I am today if it wasn't for Paul he was the only reason I didn't give up on school if I miss the bus he would come get me in his own vehicle and take me to school, he is the reason I stand up for what's right and say what's on my mind and he would always tell you the truth no matter what. I love that man he was like a father to every student he crossed paths with 

He was the only reason I graduated. I came to Northwest Alternative at a rough time in my life and he was the first one to welcome me and make me feel like I mattered and like my education mattered to someone other than myself. He was an amazing principal and an even better person.

Paul was a joy to work with.  He was always positive and insightful.   He was an ambassador for his student population. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. 

Enjoyed my time working with Paul at Northwest Alternative High School. We all had such fun there. Prayers for your family. Such a great guy!

Paul was a great man. He had such an impact on so many students myself included. Specifically students whose time in school was not without trouble and difficulty. I have no doubt that later Principals are still in his shadow to this day. Many of us have talked about him in the past day or so. To say he'll be remembered is an understatement. RIP Paul.

I Love you Pauly, always and forever. You were there for me when I needed a friend the most. I will never forget you, your smiles, and the care you gave me and my kiddos during a very turbulent time of our lives. You are already missed dearly. I will wonder what came of your writings and Tess. I will miss getting updates on your cool findings and sales, and your family growing. My heart goes out to your kids and that sweet lil granddaughter. I will carry with me the love and care you showed me and mine forever. May you Rest in Heaven my dear friend.
