

Mary Gray (Schofield) Davis passed away on December 11, 2025, in Maryville, TN at the age of 94. She was born on December 24, 1930, in Roanoke, VA, and raised in Hagerstown, MD. Gray graduated from Hood College in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics.
That same year, she married the Right Rev. Donald J. Davis and began their life of service. Their journey together took them from Hagerstown, MD in the Washington, D.C. area to Carmel, IN, Toledo, OH, Bloomington, IN and finally Erie, PA. They retired to Sarasota, FL in 1991. Following Don’s passing in 2007, Gray later relocated to Maryville, TN. Gray was loved by all who knew her. She preferred the background to the spotlight. Fun-loving, compassionate, giving and kind. She was devoted to her family and church. Her affection for animals – especially dogs – was well known among those who knew her. She was a talented seamstress and crafter and an accomplished cook and baker. She loved sewing and crafting. A devoted homemaker and bishop’s wife, Gray also owned her own
craft business.
Gray was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Donald J. Davis and eldest son, Stewart S. Davis, of Knoxville. She is survived by her children, Kristin D. Payne (Kevin) of Oviedo, FL, and Addison M. Davis, (Karen) of Walland, TN, along with grandchildren, Elliot &
Sarah Payne (FL) and Jason Raiford-Davis (Faun), and great-grandchildren, Graydon, Hendrik & Kaizen Raiford-Davis, of Knoxville.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Maryville on January 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the parish columbarium at St. Boniface Episcopal Church on Siesta Key in Sarasota, FL.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in her memory to the Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
