She met the love of her life, Alan, in 1954 in Surrey UK during the Suez Crisis, where much of the courting had to be on bicycles due to fuel rationing. They were married in 1958 and with their two children, Stuart and Jane, came to Canada in 1966.
The family first landed in Edmonton, where they embraced Canadian life and formed life-long friendships. They frequently rented a travel trailer and the family explored as far as Tofino and Coastal Oregon, with their favourite spots being Banff and Fairmont Hot Springs.
They moved to Tsawwassen (near Vancouver) in 1972, where Margaret initially took a part-time job at Henry Birks and Sons. She rose quickly within Birks, becoming a department manager and later as a buyer for the silver and fashion accessories departments. She much enjoyed buying trips to Europe and New York City.
After their retirement, Margaret and Alan relocated to Salt Spring Island, BC, where they constructed and managed Blencathra House Bed and Breakfast. The B&B was recognized in The Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest publication. They hosted dignitaries during the 1996 Commonwealth Games, and other guests from all over the world.
Margaret loved music, books, the theatre, and hiking with Alan, particularly in the Lake District. Her love for her family was strong and she was very proud of her children and grandchildren. Margaret’s grace, poise, elegance and quiet strength were apparent to anyone who met her.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Alan in 2020 and recently her younger brother Robert Perry in 2024. She is survived by children Jane Carter (Nigel) and Stuart Wooldridge (Michaela), grandchildren Julian Wooldridge (Kate), Evan Wooldridge (Kaitlyn), Brendan Wooldridge (Chantelle), James Carter (MacKenzie), and Emma Carter (Dewey).
The family is comforted that she is reunited with Alan and they are once again walking familiar trails.
At Margaret’s request, there will be no service. In lieu, please consider a donation to Lady Minto Hospital or All Saints Anglican Church on Salt Spring Island.
