

Barbara Ann Nolan Hardy, age 87, passed away peacefully at her home at Spring Hills Mount Vernon on December 9, 2025. Born and raised in Old Town Alexandria, Barbara carried her deep love of the city throughout her life. After graduating from a local high school, she served the City of Alexandria as an exceptionally competent secretary, earning respect for her diligence, warmth, and unwavering professionalism. She later became a legal secretary for a prominent law firm in Old Town, where she kept the office running effortlessly for 30 years and cared for her attorneys and staff as if they were family. Her work ethic, loyalty, and steady presence left an enduring impression on all who had the privilege of working with her.
Barbara was also known for the brilliant walking tour she gave of Old Town’s historic streets—one filled with rich stories, quick wit, and a pace that only the determined could match. Sharing the history of the place she loved was one of her greatest joys.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews who will remember her warmth, spirit, and fierce independence. She now joins her mother, Ellen Louise Rogers, her father, Jay C. Nolan, and two sisters, Margaret and Julia, and her beloved husband, Crenshaw Hardy, Jr., in their everlasting home.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Mount Comfort Cemetery, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Barbara’s family and friends will remember her for her sharp mind, her devotion to community, and her gift for bringing history to life. Her legacy lives on in the stories she told, the places she treasured, and the many lives she touched.
