Celeste was born on March 27, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts into the loving family of Daniel and Marion Hughes.
She grew up in West Roxbury, Massachusetts where, as a child, she enjoyed playing outside with her brother, two sisters, and neighborhood friends. After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Jamaica Plain, MA she began her career working for Shawmut Bank in Boston, and later the Boston Edison Electric company. It was at this time that she met George Miller, a young electrical engineer from South Boston. The two fell in love and were a match made in heaven. They were inseparable until George's passing in 1998.
The couple moved to Virginia in 1964 where Celeste worked for AAA and then the United States government. In 1969, Celeste and George were blessed with the arrival of their daughter, Susan. They could not have been happier! A year later, Greg was born and the Miller family of four was now complete.
As her children grew, Celeste re-entered the workforce working at Mount Vernon hospital and later with the medical group of Drs. Gerhard Lukowsky, Stephen Williams, Steven Yang, Laraine Field, and Maria Lukowsky. She truly treasured her time with them.
Being a mother was one of the most important parts of Celeste's life. It was a role that brought her much pride and joy. She enjoyed spending time with her family at Bryce Mountain as well as on annual trips to the beaches of Maryland and Delaware. But nothing delighted her more than vacations back to Massachusetts to visit family and friends, and soak up the sun on Cape Cod. One of her greatest joys later in life was her mother-daughter trips with her daughter Susan, her friends, and their mothers.
Celeste was blessed with six grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She cherished the moments that she was able to spend with them.
Celeste was an excellent mother. She was supportive, kind, light hearted, and always willing to listen and offer a shoulder to cry on. We will all miss her dearly.
Celeste was predeceased by her husband, George, her parents, Marion and Daniel, her brother, Larry, and her sister, Cathy. She is survived by her daughter Susan, and her children Robbie and Dani, her son, Greg, and his children Madison, Drew, Ava, and Ryan, and her sister Ann. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who were so kind to call to say hello and check on her in her later years.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Good Shepherd Housing & Family Services, P.O. Box 15096, Alexandria, VA 22309 (www.goodhousing.org).
