

SANKEY, Dorothy “Dottie” Louise, (AGE 95) a long time resident of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully on November 28, 2016. Dottie was the beloved wife of the late William Charles “Chuck” Sankey, Lt. Col (ret. US Army) and loving mother of son Patrick Sankey. Dottie is survived by her son Patrick, her daughter-in-law Frances, and her grandson Ethan Patrick.
Born in 1921 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, her parents Thelma and Curt Kittle moved to Washington, DC when she was 12. After graduating from Central High School in 1940 with a business major, Dottie went to work for the U.S. Government in the Office of Strategic Services, and later joined the War Assets Administration. In 1948, Dottie began a 29-year tenure with the United States Senate. She served on several Committee staffs and ended her Senate career in 1977 as the executive secretary of U.S. Senator Jacob Javits (R-NY). After her husband’s passing, Dottie came out of retirement to join the American Association of MESBICS, where she served more than two decades as the manager of conferences and bookkeeper. After 59 years of service to the US Government and private sector, her professional career ended in 1999. Dottie was a beloved member of the community and a long standing member of the National City Christian Church (Washington, DC) and Belle Haven Country Club (Alexandria, VA). Dottie had an exceptionally positive outlook on life and a remarkable memory. She was an avid bridge player, loved to dine out, dress up, and enjoy time with her friends and family.
Friends may pay their respects at Demaine Funeral Home (520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA). Visitation will be on December 6 (5:00 – 7:00 pm) and funeral services will begin at 9:30 am on December 7. Interment will be held at National Memorial Park (7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA) at 11:30 am.
