Douglas Edward Carroll, 70, of Alexandria, Virginia, died April 14 at Inova Fairfax Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was born in Utica, New York to Leslie and Marie Dunn Carroll. He grew up in nearby Chadwicks where he washed dishes at a local restaurant, flipped burgers at Burger King and had a paper route, perhaps sowing the seeds for his lifelong love of newspapers and his later career in journalism. He attended Notre Dame High School In Utica and Mohawk Valley Community College, also in Utica. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Utica University where he majored in Journalism and Public Relations.
Most of Doug’s career as a journalist was spent at USA Today, where he worked as a reporter and assignment editor focusing on business travel, and the auto and airline industries. Retiring after more than 30 years with USA Today, Doug later worked as an editor for Kaiser Health News and most recently, as a researcher and writer for SRB Communications in Washington, DC.
Doug worked tirelessly for his community, serving as president of the local home owners’ association board and personally responding to neighbors’ concerns and requests even after he retired as president. He was devoted to his family and a loving big brother.
Doug was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Marguerite Drogo Carroll; his two daughters Christine Berry (Michael) and Katherine; two granddaughters, Ella and Charlotte Berry; his five siblings, Mary Beth Sigmund (John), Theresa Burke (Kevin), David Carroll (Paula), Eileen Alexander and Susan Macek (Greg); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
