

Dr. Edward A. Metzbower passed away Tuesday November 2, 2021 in Alexandria, Virginia. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 1, 1938 to the late John E. & Rose Anderson Metzbower. The youngest of seven siblings, all pre-deceased, John (Helma), Mary Anderson (John Lavin), William (Evelyn), James (Margaret), Francis Xavier SJ and Rose Anderson (Gene Brown). He leaves behind his wife of 54 years Eleanor, son Christopher Paul and daughter Meghan Alycia. Dr. Metzbower died from complications from Alzheimer’s.
He attended Loyola Blakefield High School, Loyola University in Baltimore and earned his PhD at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Metzbower worked at the Naval Research Laboratory focusing on metallurgy and laser welding, making significant technical contributions in the field of laser welding. He had travelled the world in support of this technology by writing, lecturing and teaching. He served on the boards of LIA (Laser Institute of America) and ICALEO; and was a fellow at LIA, The Welding Institute (Cambridge, England), ASM International and the American Welding Society. He received the 2006 Arthur Schawlow award for his body of work in the field of laser metallurgy.
Ed lived the Jesuit teaching "Ad majórem Dei glóriaum" -For the greater glory of God- as he dedicated his life to his family, community and to the advancement of science. He was a volunteer at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, SOME, Mount Vernon & River Farms Gardens, among others. He was an avid reader, enjoyed baking, gardening, great wines and travelling.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at 12:30 PM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309, where a Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Loyola Blakefield High School (PO Box 689, Baltimore, MD 21285) or Good Shepherd Catholic Church (8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA 22308). The family was able to donate his body for Alzheimer's research.
