

Hazel Louise Peer Kelso Vance, resident of The Fairfax Retirement Community at Ft Belvoir, died December 23, 2011. She will be greatly missed by her many friends who cherished her caring and cheerful sense of humor and her family who loved her dearly.
She was born in Arlington, Virginia on January 10, 1928 to the late Paul Peer and Catherine Weaver Peer and she was a long term resident of the Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC communities. She retired from the Department of the Army in September 1991 after a 15 year career and she was decorated for Exceptional Civilian Service upon her retirement. She was married for 37 years to the late Col. Wendell W. Vance in June, 1972, and lived in Chesapeake Beach, MD, until they moved to The Fairfax near Ft Belvoir.
Hazel is also predeceased by her loving sisters, Delores Peer and Kathleen King, and her first husband, Gilbert “Gus” Kelso.
Hazel is survived by her step sons, Christopher Vance and his wife, Elizabeth, of Midlothian, VA, and Alexander Vance and his wife, Ellen, of Richmond VA, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew Stephen King of Kenly, NC.
Funeral arrangements are to be handled by the Demaine Funeral Home of Alexandria, VA. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 11:00AM at Arlington National Cemetery.
