Judith Ruth Galbreath, 79, of Alexandria, passed away after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease on December 23, 2025, at Harmony Square in Waldorf, MD. Judy was born on October 31, 1946, to George and Elizabeth Bungarz (Salig) in Staten Island, NY. On April 29, 1969, she married Col. Kenneth Galbreath, U.S. Army (Ret.), who preceded her in death.
Judy graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta with degrees in Early Childhood Education and Mathematics. After meeting Ken over a Pepsi while she was studying in Germany, the two fell in love, were married and soon settled in Linesville, PA, where they reared three daughters and made lasting friendships. In 1974 Judy earned her Masters of Education Degree (Elementary Education) from Edinboro University. Judy fulfilled a lifelong dream by teaching kindergarten through second grade over a 14 year period in the Conneaut School District.
With Ken’s career advancing in the Army, the family moved to the Washington D.C. area in 1984. After stints administering tests at the U.S. Army Education Center at Fort Belvoir, selling Tupperware and teaching preschool at their local church, Judy found a new career at the Air Force Association in Roslyn. Judy eventually earned the title of Membership Director and worked at AFA until her retirement in March of 2011. She was an active member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and participating in Women’s Circles.
Judy loved her family and had a knack for making everyone laugh with her whimsical sense of humor. Judy loved to garden, read, solve crosswords and take on even the most challenging jigsaw puzzles. She was a gifted crafter throughout her life, often excited about a new creative hobby such as ceramics, basket weaving, needlepoint, quilting and card making. Judy was especially known as an avid scrapbooker, handcrafting many beautiful family photo albums that her family will always treasure. She enjoyed entertaining her daughters and grandchildren on annual vacations to Florida and she was never far from her beloved dogs—Heather, Missy, and Sasha.
Judy is survived by her three daughters: Debra (Patrick) Allen of Ada, OH; Darcie Galbreath (Wesley Marshall) of Waldorf, MD; and Kristin (Darryl) Draper of Silver Spring, MD. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Richard Bungarz of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her sister, Gaye DeCicco, preceded her in death. She will be deeply missed by those who love her, and her family is grateful that she is now reunited with her beloved Kenny once again.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. Donations can be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association either online or by check to P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011.
