Marie Huber Peak was born on May 11, 1918 in Washington, D.C., and died on February 1, 2014, at Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Paul and Byrdie Frances Huber of Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, as well as her ex-husband, Irvin Franklin Peak of Venice, Florida. She is survived by one son, John Thomas Peak, of Alexandria, Virginia, cousins in Masryland on her father's side, and numerous cousins on both sides of the family throughout the Midwest.
Marie was born on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C, grew up in the Brookland section of Northeast Washington, graduating from St. Anthony’s High School and receiving her junior college degree from Strayer University. She also attended classes at the Catholic University of America. Marie later moved to the Hillcrest section of Southeast Washington and then to Hillcrest Heights, Maryland.
Marie began employment with the Federal Government in Washington, D.C., and had the privilege of working for a short time for Admiral Richard E. Byrd, the Antarctic explorer. She also worked on the Manhattan Project during World War Two. Marie ended her career as an administrative secretary to the Director of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation at the U.S. Department of the Interior. She also worked part-time, first at Woodward & Lothrop (Woodies) department store, and then at Julius Garfinkel’s department store as a bridal consultant.
After retirement, Marie moved from Maryland to Alexandria, Virginia, where she was a member of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Marie enjoyed gardening, ceramics, attending plays at Aldersgate Methodist Church and the Little Theatre of Alexandria, as well as day trips sponsored by the Hollin Hall Senior Center. She also worked as a volunteer at the Mount. Vernon Hospital.
Marie moved to Sunrise at Mount Vernon assisted living community, cutting the ribbon when it first opened in July 2002. She was the last surviving member of the Founders Club of original residents. Marie was an avid bingo player at Sunrise, and managed to collect (and spend) lots of “bingo bucks” over the years. She was a long-standing member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and looked forward to the visits from the Eucharistic Ministers on Sundays and mid-week. Marie will be sorely missed by those who knew her, but she will live in our hearts forever.
Funeral services were provided by Demaine Funeral Home of Old Town Alexandria where visitation occurred on February 5, 2014, with recitation of the holy rosary. A funeral Mass was held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mount Vernon on February 6, 2014, with burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland.
