
Of Alexandria, VA, passed away May 1, 2014.
He was born in Peoria, IL September 30, 1940 to James D. Larkin and Margaret Tortat. Michael graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Electrical Engineering, received a Master In Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University and an MBA from Auburn University. He also received a Professional Engineering License in 1970. Michael was married to Sylvia Amanda Larkin on March 30, 1968.
Michael served in the United States Air Force for 23 years attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. Stationed at military bases in California, Alabama and Virginia, his worked focused primarily in systems command, satellite testing and development. Upon retirement from the military in 1983, he took a position with Lockheed Martin as a senior engineer for 22 years.
Michael was an active member of Heritage Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the choir, the bell choir, an Elder and Clerk of Session. He was very active in local amateur radio where he worked with other local ham radio groups providing back-up communication systems for the Annual Marine Corp Marathon. Michael enjoyed being a certified referee for the Lee/Mt. Vernon Soccer Association and a soccer referee instructor.
He is survived by his three children, Margaret Hollifield of Charlotte, NC, Kathleen Kelly of Woodbridge, VA and James Larkin of Springfield, VA. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Nathaniel, Hannah, Ethan, Madeline and Andrew.
A celebration of life will held in his honor at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. Donations in Michael's memory can be made to the Heritage Presbyterian Church Music Fund.
