Robert,
I'd been struggling for a week to figure out what to say, and then I felt your presence today.  I was confronted with a challenge, and you calmed me.  Thank you.  You will always be in my heart, in my prayers, and on my mind.  Until we meet again.  Love you.

I have been over to your house many times, and have seen you all many times, but unfortunately, interacted with Robert only on a few occasions. I cannot express how much I regret that now. The feelings people have expressed make it easy to feel also what a great person he was. When I did talk with him, it was easy to see that he was a man who truly understood everything you were saying, even if you were 100% wrong in your own right way, and would not put you down for it. Not to mention, every time I brought up Cross Country to Lizzy, she would recall an amazing story about one of Robert or Matts' races or records. Which she really did not need to because I saw them running all the time, probably running faster than my race pace. It is really tragic that he has passed away so suddenly, and I am sorry for this loss which the whole community feels. My family and I extend our condolences to yours. 

You may have never known it, but you have always been with me in my races. I've looked up your times for your senior year, and I repeat to myself your times during a race, and aim for them myself. Sometimes when I felt like giving up, I'd think Run for Robbie. I had always been hoping for the day where I could finally go and shake your hand and say, I beat you. Which I doubt would've ever happened. But it's because I admired you, and every time I questioned of what is a runner, I thought of you and Matt, and I strive to be of the same kind of person. You have left many marks on many lives, and never will you be forgotten.

When asked how he ran so hard for so long, Rob once told me that he did it because he expected it to be difficult.  But in the end, he said, it was all worth it when he crossed the finish line.  I will miss Rob, he was a wonderful person, so full of life and dedicated in everything that he did.  I know that the days ahead will be difficult for all of his friends and family, but I truly believe that Rob is with us every step of the fight.  He is with us, and waiting for us at the finish line.  When in doubt, remember that Rob is our guardian angel - running a couple steps ahead to make sure we are safe on our journey through life.  

To the Sagar family, thank you for blessing all of us with Rob.  You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

I only knew Rob for a very short time since he began working at Bishop Ireton.  He was a amazing person - very kind, humble, easy to talk to.  He had an extraordinary impact on the students he taught.  He is an inspiration to all.  I am very sorry for your loss.  Hopefully your good memories with Rob will last forever in your hearts.  My prayers are with you.

Our warmest thoughts are with you during this most  difficult time.  As you comprehend this profound loss, let yourself cry knowing each tear is a note of love rising to the heavens.

We have not seen your family in many years, except occasionally at church, but we do remember Robert fondly from the days when he, Kristen, and Matt were at St. Louis together.  What amazing things Robert accomplished in his young life! You are all in our thoughts and we are praying for your entire family in your tragic loss.

I wish there was something profound I could say, but its tough to find words. Rob, you were a role model as a Christian, athlete, and student. Taken too early, but your impact will be lasting. Until we meet again.

Mr. Sagar was the new guy, but every single student loved him. He was an amazing sub who gave you freedom but made sure you did your work and that you completed whatever assignment was assigned. He proctored the testing center and was so nice about it, which is hard when you are giving up your free time to give a bunch of kids tests. He would have conversations with anyone who started one with him about almost anything. He also went on our World War I field trips, I remember him being so unbelievably interested by the museums we went to. He and Mr. Rauer were having such a great time. We have another field trip on Friday and I know we all will feel a hole without him there. 

Mr. Sagar did impact me, more than I thought. All I really knew about him was him and Matt graduated from Ireton with my older brother and that was probably the extent of what he knew about me. 
After the funeral today though, I found myself needing to run. I am not a runner nor have I ever been a runner. But today, I found myself running and running and not wanting to stop. I realized I was running for him. He had inspired me. 

I can't believe I will never get the chance to really know him, but he changed Ireton. He impacted everyone there, including me. I don't think a day will go by where he is not remembered and I am pretty sure every time an Ireton student runs, they will think of Rob Sagar. 

I am so sorry for your lost and know your entire family is in my prayers.

Dear Matt, Rich, Debbie, and Lizzy (Although you probably don't remember me)

 I hope that all of you guys find the best way to deal with this. Without your family being in my life when I was younger, then I would not have had such a great childhood. I have countless memories of things like "Glass Mountain", that snake we found in your yard that one time that the neighbors tried to run over with their car (lol), The fact that every time it rained or there was a tornado warning, we would make a tent out of Matt and Robby's bunk beds and just hide inside and tell stories... I also will never forget how anytime Matt and robby got into an argument, Robby would bring up the fact that is he 9 minutes older, and therefore more mature! Those were the golden days of my youth, and it would not have been possible without Robby. May God Bless All Of You!

Mr Sagar taught my first period religion class for about a month and a half this year. I am praying for your beautiful family.

I have worked with Rich for years, and over that time came to know Robert through the many stories of accomplishments and college life.  Rich always expressed extreme love, happiness and pride in Robert.

I did not know Robert personally, but I was fortunate to have Matt as a teammate last year. From how Matt spoke so highly of him and the statements from family and friends in this Guest Book, it is obvious that he had a heart for others, had so many opportunities before him, and most important had faith and salvation through Christ. 

Like Paul told Timothy in his second letter, I can imagine these words being spoken by Robert:

"But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministy. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:5-8)

Robbie-

When I read your senior quotation, I was reminded of another by Steinbeck. "We should remember our dying and try to live that our death brings no pleasure to the world."  I firmly believe you did that...there's such an outpouring of love from your friends, your family, I feel truly blessed to have known someone so remarkable.  I remember being students at St. Louis together and always being impressed by your intelligence, athleticism, and humility...in the nearly 10 years that passed since then, you grew into a wonderful, talented man, and I am honored to have known you.

Matt, when I fisrt heard the news about Rob I wanted so badly to say something, but I was in shock and could not find the words, especially since it has been a couple of years since we have seen each other. These past couple of days I have thought of nothing but you and Rob. You both have been such a huge part of my childhood from first grade at St. Louis to Ireton. There are too many good memories to list. Robert was an amazing person and he has touched so many lives. I am praying for you and your family.

Although you had just returned to B.I. In August, you had already begun to have an impact on the students and staff.  We will surely miss your presence, but know you will be with us always.  To Matt, Lizzie, and your parents please know my prayers and the prayers of our family are with you.

First and foremost, I want to thank God for having put you in my life. I vouch to do all I can to honor in every possible way throughout my life. I want to let you know that you were the one person that put meaning to my life and I thank you for that. I will cherish all the memories that we shared together for as long as I live. I am truly amazed, but not impressed, to see how many lives you touched with your gentle, noble and loving ways. My family and I will always hold a special place for you and your family close to our hearts. I know there will be someone else up there answering our prayers and looking down upon us. Rob will be so missed. I had the honor to watch him run at WM for 4 years. He is so loved by his teammates. I think I can speak for the parents of WM runners that our sons are better people today because Rob was a part of their life.

Dear Matt, I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Robert. I know how difficult this must be for you and your family. Each of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember while we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him in Heaven. Although I never got the chance to stop and chat with your brother I will never forget him at the W&M 1/2 Marathon this past year, I was in the Zone and I hear "LETS GO VMI" knowing no other VMI people were around, I pushed harder and as I drew near there stood Robert urging me to pick-it-up. On the way pack towards the finish it was no different "LETS GO VMI, LOOK GOOD, STAY STRONG." His encouraging, and motivating words were the fuel I needed to finish in 1hr:20min. I am greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Robert. Upon reflection, I think back to the fall of 2002 and cross-country season at Ireton. Matt had joined the team as a freshman and was doing well, working his way into the top-5 group of runners. So, it was an inspiring day when after one practice, Mr. Sagar mentioned, "You know, he has a twin brother who's just as good." 

I was pleased to see Robert and Matt at the State Catholic CC meet here in Newport News in 2005. Rob won and I believe Matt was second, continuing a friendly rivalry which continued as they competed at separate colleges, Rob at W&M and Matt at VMI. It was great to talk with Rob when he ran at the indoor track meets at Christopher Newport Univ.

Elizabeth and I extend our thoughts and prayers for the Sagar family during this time of mourning. Robert's life was brief, but his legacy will extend far.

It does not feel the same nor does it seem fair, but I know there is a reason for all of this.  They say the good die young, and you were no exception!  You were a role model to everyone, including me, your younger brother.  The day you were taken from the family will be a day that will never be forgotten.  It is a day that we all mourned the loss of a young, ambitious, and noble young adult with all the potential in the world.  But, it is also a day that we will celebrate the life of a young man who touched the lives of many.  

I love you Robert and I ask that you look the family and help us through these difficult times and to celebrate with us during the great times!  Right now, I know you are in a better place living the most perfect eternal life that we all strive for.  I hope to see you up there one day, running shoes laced, short-shorts on, and ready to roll!

I extend the embrace of consolation of all of us in the Ireton family for the grief you suffer and that we share over Rob's passing from our midst so soon.  We loved him. There has been no finer exemplar of St. Francis De Sales exhortation to "be who you are and be that well" than Rob Sagar.  The indelible mark he left on all who were privileged to share his splendid company and whose hearts he touched will be made visble here forever. From now on, the track at Bishop Ireton High School will be named for him.  May God bless you and your beautiful family and make the Ireton community and instrument of His Grace in your lives.

My Wonderful Cousin Robby,
I cannot believe this is really happening. My heart is braking right now, I cannot put into words how much I will miss you.  Growing up we saw each other every holiday, I have so many memories of Christmas’s like: when you broke nanny and papa’s singing bell!!, Jessica’s doll’s head flying across the room hitting nanny in the face, tracking Santa on TV, staying up all night trying to hear him land on the roof, karaoke pageants from the balcony and SO many more. I remember visiting you  guys every summer looking through your little year books, and you telling me about all your friends. Trips to the beach, walking the boardwalk, playing at the carnival and waiting in line for HOURS to be the first group to ride on the haunted house! Those trips to see you and your family were something I looked forward to more then words can express.  You and  Matt were more then my cousin’s, you were (and are still) my best friends. Then along came your BEAUTIFUL sister Lizzy. Such little helpers you and Matt where with her. You and everyone around her would dote on her … but NO ONE  held her on a higher pedestal then her “brothers” . You were so proud of her, and loved her so much. When I saw you with her it was just a small glimpse into the humble, sweet, kind, patient, gentle loving man you would become. Your soft spoken words and listening ear have helped me through  many of my life struggles.  I have selfishly made so many plans in my head about what our future would hold; and I weep at the thought that those dreams will never be fulfilled. However when I think about you, and all of the amazing times we have shared  I will try and remind myself that when someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Robby, I will treasure you forever and a day. You inspire me to be a better person, to listen better and never again wish time away, but rather be aware of how precious life is, every moment of every day. I may never again see your smile in the flesh, I will feel it in my heart, I may never again hear that childish laughter, but your humor will ring out through me, I may never again feel your hug, but your love embraces my soul. You have touched many more lives then just my own, this is just one small chapter from the story of my journey with you. It is with a heavy heart that I bid you a farewell. Until I see your kind and welcoming smile again, I will slow down my days and enjoy  the small things, laugh a littler louder, worry a little less, and listen a little harder, but most of all, I will be a friend to someone, like you have been to me.
