Stuart C. Nottingham, M.D., Waynewood Community, Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on June 1, 2020 at the age of 89. Stuart was born April 18, 1931 to parents Nathaniel D. and Shirley C. Nottingham in Norfolk, Virginia. One of three sons, he attended Granby High School. Early on he knew he wanted to be a physician and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He married Anne Miller, with whom he had eight children, until she succumbed to cancer in January 1997. He married Linda Marie Bailey in 1998. In recent years Stuart is best described as a poet, and he published several volumes of poetry. He was an active member and officer of the Poetry Society of Virginia for more than a decade. Before turning to poetry he was a career Public Health Corps physician in the United States Public Health Service where he served in multiple programs and organizations and earned a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. As the Chief, Hospital and Ambulance Services Branch, he created standards for Emergency Health Systems which underpin our current emergency health delivery systems. He retired from the PHS in 1980 and subsequently worked for a time with the Virginia State Health Department before stopping work to devote his time to his family, his poetry, and his books. He particularly enjoyed cultivating myriad plants including a lemon tree he grew from a seed in a lemon slice he retrieved from a glass of tea. He gave serious attention to pet turtles and native Virginia flora and fauna. He was proud to be a Virginian. Stuart is survived by his wife, Linda Nottingham; brother Mason G. and his wife Carol; daughters Mary Nottingham and spouse Teresa, and Connell Pennington; sons Stuart Jr and wife Laura; Richard and wife Judy; and Kenneth and wife Karla; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; three sons Jack, Christopher, and Stephen; his parents; and brother, Nathaniel Jr. There will be a private cremation and his ashes will be interred alongside his first wife Anne and son Jack at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Alexandria. The family is grateful for condolences, but declines flowers and donations. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, a memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
