Thomas Richard Humphries

Thomas Richard Humphries was called home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Tom was born in Warren, Ohio, on November 16, 1946 to Richard Thomas and Sara Mullet Humphries. He grew up on a farm in Orwell, Ohio, with his younger brother, Edward Harry Humphries.

Tom graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy and completed his residency and Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Kentucky. During this program he had the opportunity to complete a three month rotation at Guy’s Hospital in London, England.

Tom began his career at the University of Kentucky Albert B Chandler Medical Center and in 1976 moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to help open Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where he served as Director of Pharmacy for 30 years. Tom then transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital until his retirement in 2014.

Tom met his wife, Peggy, in 1972 while working at the UK Medical Center and they immediately bonded over sports, especially their beloved UK Wildcats. They continued their shared love of sports with the Washington Redskins after moving to Alexandria.

In 1984, Tom and Peggy had the good fortune to move to the Riverwood community in Mount Vernon. It was the perfect place to make friends who then became family and raise their two boys. Tom loved Riverwood and spent many hours working with neighbors to keep the common property beautiful. He was never happier than when working in the park or along the river path.

The arrival of his sons, Christopher in 1987 and Adam in 1990, were the happiest days of his life. He loved being a Dad.

Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy, his sons, Christopher (Erin) and Adam and two precious granddaughters, Aprilia and Aston. He is also survived by his brother Harry (Julie) Humphries, Pickerington, Ohio, and many cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
