

Townsend Allen “Van” Van Fleet of Old Town Alexandria, Va passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 17, 2022. Van was born on January 12, 1935 in San Francisco, California to Allen and Ellenia Van Fleet.
He was a 1958 graduate of West Point and retired as a Colonel in 1981. He served a tour as an artillery advisor to the South Vietnamese in 1969.
After retiring from the military he founded his governmental relations firms, Van Fleet Associates, MOVAN, and Legislative Associates International.
He lived in Alexandria over 40 years where he was active in community politics. He served with the Old Town Civic Association, the Waterfront Commission and the Federation of Civic Association. He unsuccessfully ran for Mayor in 2003 and for city council in 2006 and 2015.
In his life, Van did not always agree but he was never disagreeable.
He was predeceased by his parents and his second wife, Julie Crenshaw Van Fleet.
A visitation will be held at Demaine Funeral Home of Old Town Alexandria on Sunday, October 30 from 3:00 to 7:00.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be determined.
