Born in Bronx, NY on March 29th, 1938, Bernie displayed exceptional intellect from a young age, achieving Salutatorian honors at Bayside High School at just 15 years old. He continued his academic prowess, graduating from Queens College at 19 before pursuing his career in medicine. Bernie's commitment to service led him to proudly serve two years in the Air Force, an experience that deepened his dedication to healthcare.
As an intern at DC General Hospital in the early 1960s, Bernie made significant contributions to emergency medical care by developing the "crash cart" system. His passion for oncology guided his specialization in the field during its formative years, distinguishing himself from traditional hematologists. Bernie's contributions were celebrated with a historic keynote address at the American College of Oncology, where he was honored as the first community oncologist to receive such recognition. His groundbreaking work and unwavering standards set a benchmark in his profession, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bernie was known for his incredible sense of humor, which brought comfort to his patients during challenging times.
Despite his numerous accolades, Bernie remained humble, prioritizing his role as a loving husband to his devoted wife, Roberta, and a dedicated father to his three daughters, Pam, Erica, and Cindy, along with their husbands and cherished grandchildren. He cherished family time immensely, always finding moments to be present despite his demanding schedule. His ability to balance work and family life, often with humorous anecdotes like napping at stoplights, endeared him to all who knew him.
Bernie's legacy will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer or Alzheimer’s charities Bernie's memory (soon to be listed on this website). A memorial service will be held at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 90 Weathersfield Ave, Altamonte Springs, FL on June 30th at 11:30am, to celebrate his remarkable life and enduring impact.
