Elaine Demos Miliotes, 83, born February 17, 1933, Indianapolis, IN, died February 18, 2016, Longwood, FL. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and faithful Greek Orthodox Christian. Fiercely intelligent with a quirky sense of humor, she was always ready for an energetic, friendly debate. Loyal Democrat and feminist, avid reader, book collector, and elegant writer. Adventurous traveler, culture maven, sports fanatic, food lover, and exceptional chef. She was valedictorian at George Washington High in her hometown and returned to her alma mater to teach English and Latin after graduating from DePauw University with honors. In her 20s, she caught the travel bug when touring Europe in a VW van with several other women, and upon her return, met husband Chris at a church dance. Early in their marriage they lived in London for 3 years, later settling in the Chicago area, where she was a homemaker and active volunteer for initiatives such as Great Books. In the early 1970s, the family moved to Winter Park, FL, where she and Chris jointly ran the restaurants Mr. Dunderbak’s (Wunderbar) and Chris’s House of Beef. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where she served as parish president and council member, as well as president and member of the Ladies’ Philoptochos Society. She is remembered fondly there for her incredible energy, organizational skills, friendship, and good humor, particularly when preparing for events with beloved friends in the church kitchens. She especially delighted in her grandchildren, and even when ill, lit up whenever they were nearby. Up until the end, she retained her generous, loving spirit, ready smile, and sparkling blue eyes; she will forever have three kisses for Chris. As a beloved friend and family member, she will be mourned and fondly remembered by many here and around the country, including her new family at Serenades. Survivors include husband of 58 years, Christos; 3 children, Diane (Agnes Lugo-Ortiz), George (Leanne), and James (Anna); 6 grandchildren, Devan, Lanie, Jordan, Christopher, Kendall, and Anna; and 2 great-grandchildren, Bella and Landon. Viewing: Sun., 6-8PM; funeral Mon., 10AM, both at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Maitland, FL. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Mortgage Reduction Fund.
Arrangements under the direction of Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL.
