Foster was born to Jake and Beatrice Levy in Birmingham, Alabama on February 19, 1928. He graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree. At Duke, he played clarinet in the marching band and saxophone in the jazz band. While at Duke, he also was one of the coaches of the school’s swimming team. He attended graduate school at the University of Alabama, and received an MBA from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
After college, he moved to Chicago and then Baltimore where he worked for Martin Marietta as a contracts manager in the defense industry. He later relocated to Orlando, Florida in the late 50’s to work in the space industry. Foster met Sherry Kantor in Orlando in 1961 and married her three months later. A few years after that, his son Evan was born. He went on to attend dental school in Louisville, Kentucky, where his second son, Gordon was born. He later realized that dentistry was not his calling and returned to central Florida, where he worked as a contracts manager at Harris Corporation. While at Harris, his third child, Samantha was born. When the space industry downsized in the early 70’s, he decided to pursue a new career path, building a gum and candy vending business. He had locations across central Florida with nearly 1,000 machines stretching from the Gulf to the Atlantic and from Bradenton to St. Augustine. He ran FLL Vending until he sold the business and retired in 1994. Never one to sit still, he was able to pursue his passion of golf, going to the golf course nearly every day after he retired until the pandemic of 2020. Few people are able to enjoy 27 years of retirement, and there’s no argument that he enjoyed every day of his.
Foster was proud of his family, from the professional accomplishments of his wife of 61 years, Sherry, to the various career developments of his children. Everyone who met him enjoyed his stories and his unique sense of humor. He enjoyed playing his clarinet and loved to play along with the radio or television.
Foster is survived by his wife, Sherry; and his children, Evan (spouse Karen Robicheau), Gordon (spouse Sharon Bowen), and Samantha.
A funeral service for Foster will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 90 Weathersfield Ave, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714, followed by a reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
