Irene Mavres

Irene Mavres, age 88, of Sanford, Florida passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. Irene was born July 31, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Emanuel and Anna (Efstathiou) Mavrikes.

She was predeceased by her parents, beloved husband of 52 years, Arthur, sister Catherine Theophylactos and brother Tom Mavrikes. She is Survived by her children, Mary Ann Myers, James Mavres (Annette), Katherine Ellis (John), Emanuel Mavres (Michelle); sisters, Angela Hughes and Urania Elliott; grandchildren; Paul, Arthur, Nicole, Sophia, Eleni, Emanuel, Rebecca, Sarah, Christopher and Hannah, and great-grandchildren; Nicholas, James and Primavera and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

In Cleveland, she ran her hairdressing salon out of the basement while homemaking and raising four children. After moving to Orlando, she helped her husband with their restaurants and later worked at Service Merchandise from which she retired.

Irene was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church and the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a philanthropic group dedicated to assisting in the community. Irene was an important member of the ministry that knitted healing shawls for cancer patients and 40-day infant blankets. She had a giving spirit and was happy to give her last dollar to anyone who asked her, often asking her daughters to stop to offer food to the homeless on the street. She loved children and was called Yiayia by not only her grandchildren, but also by their friends and the children she babysat. Irene baked the best sweet bread with a recipe handed down from her mother. She was filled with love and laughter. Her warm hugs, infectious laugh, and smile that lit up the room will be sorely missed.

A visitation for Irene will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1217 Trinity Woods Lane, Maitland, Florida 32751. A funeral service will follow from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A committal service will be at 11:00 AM at Highland Memory Gardens, 3329 East Semoran Boulevard, Apopka, Florida 32703.

In lieu of flowers, the family has graciously requested that donations be made in memory of Irene Mavres to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Maitland, FL.
