Scobey worked at Panhandle Power and Light, Pantex and the Helium Plant until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for Wilborn Tank Co. while he drew plans for a service station. Scobey built a Phillips 66 where Interstate 40 stands today. When the Interstate came through Amarillo, he built a Mobil Oil service station at the corner of I-40 and Eastern. Scobey built his home behind the station and eventually, sold the station to retire. Then, he decided to build a convenience store on his property and Scobey’s Kwik Chex became reality. In the fall of 1979, Scobey sold the store to retire once again. Scobey was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church and a founding member of the Sunrise Lions Club. He dedicated his life to serving his family, community, and country. Heaven gained a good and faithful servant. Those who loved “Popa” will miss his advice, jokes, and stories covering the better part of a century and look forward to Reunion day at the throne of God.
