Gary L. Brown, M.D., a devoted physician, lifelong learner, and beloved father, passed away on January 17. He was a man of quiet strength, deep intelligence, and steady compassion, whose life’s work was caring for others and advancing the field of urology.
Gary earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1972. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1976. His medical training included a surgical internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, followed by a general surgery residency and a urology residency at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School–affiliated hospitals. In 1984, he became board certified by the American Board of Urology.
Dr. Brown practiced medicine in Amarillo, Texas, for more than four decades. He began his career in private practice in 1982 and later joined Amarillo Urology Associates in 1994. He was also a Clinical Investigator with Pharma Tex Research from 1996 to 2009. Throughout his career, he held active medical staff privileges at Northwest Texas Hospital and Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital. Gary was respected not only for his clinical skill, but for his contributions to medical research and education. He authored and presented numerous papers in the field of urology and oncology, including published work in Urology Clinics of North America. His research earned recognition at national and regional medical conferences, including first prize honors and invited presentations at meetings of the American Urological Association and the American Association for Cancer Research. Outside of his professional life, Gary found true joy in the pursuits he loved most. A gifted photographer, accomplished skeet shooter, and passionate bird hunter, he expressed through these interests his creativity, skill, and deep appreciation for beauty in all its forms. Despite his many professional achievements, Gary’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his cherished daughters, Paige and Bradley; his stepson, Sawyer; and his beloved grandsons, Cannon and Casler.
A private family service will be held on February 7.
Gary’s legacy lives on through the countless patients he cared for, the colleagues he mentored, and the family who loved him deeply.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Gary’s memory to Tascosa High School. Contributions will be made through go fund me page (Honoring the Life and Legacy of Gary L. Brown MD.) supporting students, teachers, and programs at Tascosa High School.
