Gerald was born in Electra, Texas, to John and Catherine Kempf. His family later moved to Amarillo, where his parents became members of St. Mary Church—a parish Gerald faithfully remained a part of throughout his life. On June 15, 1961, Gerald married the love of his life, Mary Summers. Together they built a strong and loving family, raising four children and sharing many cherished years. Gerald was a dedicated and hardworking man. He spent 30 years with Furr’s Supermarket before continuing his career as a route salesman with Frito-Lay for 21 years. Though he was eventually forced into early disability retirement, Gerald never stopped serving others. He generously helped neighbors with yard work and lovingly cared for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often taking them to and from school until he was no longer able. Family was the center of Gerald’s life. His greatest joy was spending time with his loved ones, especially the babies, who brought him endless happiness.
He is survived by his son, Michael Kempf and wife Penny of Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Theresa Hamilton, Margaret Hoffman and husband Richard, and Paula Nugent and husband Mike, all of Amarillo; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Connie Kempf of Amarillo, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Kempf; his parents; his sister, Theresa Burzzi and her husband Richard; and his brothers, David Kempf and Thomas Kempf.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Gerald, to support others fighting this disease.
Gerald will be remembered for his kindness, his strong work ethic, and his deep love for family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
