He was born on January 1, 1946, in Amarillo to Frank and Juanita Hunter.
Jimmie married the love of his life, Rosalie Carlile, in October of 1984. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from October 1967 to July 1969. He often joked with fellow Navy veterans about never going to sea, having spent the majority of his service time in Arizona. A devoted member of Northside United Pentecostal Church for over 50 years, Jimmie was deeply involved in his church and served in many capacities. His faith was the cornerstone of his life—he loved his Lord and Savior above all else and led by example rather than words. Jimmie gave generously of his time, volunteering for more than 20 years at the Amarillo VA. He was known for his many talents and hobbies, including fishing—where he proudly claimed the title of “professional fisherman”—as well as carpentry and leatherwork. He was a man who never hesitated to share his advice, especially with his children, whether they followed it or not. Known as Dad to some and Papa to others, Jimmie cherished his family deeply and loved his children and grandchildren without reservation. He was also a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jimmie is survived by his sons, David Lane, Frank Hunter, Jimmie Varner; his daughters, Melanie Stewart, Gaylon Box, and Sandra Dia; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Edith Ferrell.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalie Hunter; his parents, Juanita and Frank Hunter; and his brother, Wes Hunter.
Above all, Jimmie will be remembered as a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, a loving father and grandfather, and a man who lived his life with purpose, humility, and unwavering faith.
