Johnny was born on May 7, 1935, in Bangor, Alabama. In 1951, he moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he later met the love of his life, Ann, and began his long and accomplished career with the Texas Department of Transportation. Johnny started working for the Texas Department of Transportation in 1957 and dedicated 33 years of service to the State of Texas. His career eventually took his family to Gruver, Texas in 1976, where he and Ann enjoyed raising their girls in the close-knit small-town community. In 1982, the family returned to Amarillo, where Johnny continued his work and ultimately retired in 1990 as a District Superintendent of Maintenance. Johnny and Ann shared a deep love for traveling the country in their camper with friends and family. When asked about his favorite time in life, Johnny would often say those years spent traveling together were the best of his life. He was also a proud lifetime member and Mason of Palo Duro Lodge.
Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Ruth Stepp, and his cherished daughter, Kathryn Ann Stepp.
He is survived by his daughters: Lisa Martin of Denton, Texas; Cheryl Evans and husband Terrell Evans of Spearman, Texas; and Carla Pilcher and partner Dick Robinson of Amarillo, Texas.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brady Hart and wife Nikki Hart of Gruver, Texas; Wade Evans and wife Mandy Evans of Webb City, Missouri; Leslyn Boyles and husband Brandon Boyles of Amarillo, Texas; Megan Clem and husband Beau Clem of Mustang, Oklahoma; Zack Cross of Denton, Texas; Will Cross of Denton, Texas; and Jared Pilcher and wife Lindsey Pilcher of Canyon, Texas; along with several beloved great-grandchildren.
Johnny will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, and the many memories made traveling the country with those he loved. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the values he passed down to the generations who follow.
