Joyce (Rice) Payne passed from her earthly life to meet her Heavenly Father and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 29, 2023, at the age of 90. Joyce was born in Amarillo, TX on December 2, 1932, to Ansel Edward Rice and Elsie Elizabeth (Bullock) Rice. Joyce had two older brothers, Roy Rice and Ray Rice. She was very proud of both her brothers for serving in the US Navy during World War II. Joyce attended San Jacinto Jr. High School and graduated from Amarillo High School. She married the love of her life, John Otis Payne of Wellington, TX, on October 7, 1950. Together they lived in Amarillo,
Midland, Friona, Hereford, Clovis, NM, Muleshoe, and Lubbock before eventually moving to San Antonio in 2004 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Joyce and John had four children and enjoyed a wonderful life together for more than 56 years until John’s death on April 27, 2007. Joyce was a full-time mother to her children until she started working at various businesses. She discovered a passion for custom picture framing, with much guidance from long-time friends, Jo (Teddy) & Don Roberts of San Antonio. Joyce eventually opened a custom picture framing business, Lubbock Custom Frame, which she owned and operated next door to John’s Lubbock Sewing Center. Joyce and John operated their shops together for many years before closing both businesses. Joyce then worked for Michael’s and Hobby Lobby in the custom picture framing departments. She continued to share her talents and creativity with others until she retired from Hobby Lobby in Lubbock at the age of 65. Joyce was an excellent seamstress and immensely enjoyed making clothes for all her children and for John. She also enjoyed crocheting and looked forward to hearing news that someone was expecting a baby so she could crochet baby blankets and booties for the newborns. Joyce also enjoyed the times she could get together with the Amarillo High School Chums group.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, John, her father and mother, Ansel and Elsie Rice, and both her brothers, Roy and Ray Rice, and a grandson, Michael Cave.
Those left to cherish Joyce’s memory include her daughter Vickie Cannon (Doug) of San Antonio, son Alan Payne of San Antonio, daughter Lisa Cave (Al) of Bay City, MI, and son Jay Payne (Marci) of Lubbock; grandchildren Jeff Cannon (Rebecca), Brian Cannon (Belinda), Beth Allen, Lia Payne, Eric Payne, Taylor Wright-Ward (Jayme), Shelley Cave, Stephanie Cave, and Meaghan Cave as well as six great-grandchildren, and many other extended relatives.
