Gordie died peacefully on Monday, June 4 at Buffalo General Hospital with family at his bedside. Part of Depew High School’s
Class of 1956, he was a natural athlete and set many records in both baseball and football. His modesty and sense of humor made him a friend to many. After two years at Brockport College, he enlisted in the US Army. Stationed at the Nike base in
Hamburg, NY, he was a part of the traveling ping pong and rifle teams, earning a number of medals for both. During his working years, Gordie held a number of supervisory positions in insurance and security fields and on one occasion, managed safety
operations for a strike at the New York Times. Gordie was very athletic and enjoyed, among other things, baseball, biking, pool and ping pong. He was a natural at all sports. Gordie and his wife, Sharon, shared a love of toys, including sailboats, sports cars and several Model A Fords, as well as numerous motorcycle and car trips to the Adirondacks, Thousand Islands or
wherever the road took them. A diagnosis of dementia four years ago was devastating, but he refused to let it lessen his joy of life. Its progression was slow enough to allow him to live at home until a few months ago. A family trip to Disneyworld two years ago remained one of his happiest memories. Time spent with his grandchildren and four family dogs also brought him loads of smiles. He will be remembered for his love of life and family, his incredible sense of humor and unending enthusiasm. Gordie is survived by Sharon, his wife of 39 years; his daughter Barbara and son Todd; grandchildren Allison, Jackson
and Spencer; former wife, Marcia; and brother-in-law Don (Robbie) Gerth. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, June 16 at 10:30 am at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 6320 Main St, Williamsville followed by a gathering in the Emerson Room at the church. Flowers gratefully declined.
