Barbara “Barb” Canova, born May 30, 1939, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Eugene and Rose Henry, passed away on March 25, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, warmth, and deep devotion to her family and community. A visitation for Barb will be held on Thursday, April 2nd from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Ankeny Funeral Home. During her visitation, there will be a time of sharing starting at 5:00 p.m. for everyone to share fond memories and stories about Barb.
Barb earned her Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska Omaha, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to learning and helping others. After moving to Ankeny, Iowa, she became an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where she served as a devoted parishioner and contributed her time and talents faithfully.
Barb was known most of all for her caring heart. She was a loving and attentive grandmother who cherished her family above all else. Her kindness extended far beyond her home through her extensive volunteer work. She dedicated countless hours to organizations, including Dollar for Scholars, the Ankeny School District, Community Education programs, the Ankeny Substance Abuse Project, the Ankeny Swim Club, various youth sports clubs, FFA, Grandfather’s Farm, and home health care services. Her efforts touched many lives and strengthened her community in lasting ways.
Her contributions did not go unnoticed. In addition to receiving widespread local recognition for her volunteer work and community impact, Barb was honored with the National Community Education National Volunteer of the year Award. She was also appointed to committees by Governor Branstad and actively participated in the Youth Leadership Council and the PEO.
Barb found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful companionship. She loved the winter season, especially figure skating, and often preferred its crisp beauty over the heat of summer. She enjoyed watching or listening to Fox News and spending time with her favorite television show, Matlock. In quieter moments, she could be found playing solitaire.
She had a creative spirit and loved sewing, knitting, and gardening—activities she especially enjoyed sharing with her beloved husband, affectionately known as “Spook.” Together, they owned horses and took pride in watching their children show them.
Barb also shared a special bond with her loyal dog, Baxter, who was her constant companion and dear friend.
Barb Canova will be remembered for her generosity, dedication, and the love she gave so freely to her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and the enduring example she set.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Henry and Rose Henry (Pros); her husband, D.B. “Spook” Canova; and her brother Tom Henry.
She was survived by her children, Dave (Tammy) Canova, Sara Canova, and Dan (Dawn) Canova; her 9 grandchildren; and her 11 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to Ankeny Dollars for Scholars in memory of Barb and Spook Canova.
