Don Hinman, 72, passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Funeral Mass will be 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, 510 East First Street, Ankeny 50021 with burial at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Don was born February 9, 1938 in Boone, Iowa to Clarence and Emma (Morrow) Hinman. He attended and completed Air/War College in 1983-84 and received his Masters of Public Administration from Drake University in May of 1987. Don was appointed Director of Disaster Services for the State of Iowa in October 1967 and also worked for the WIC Program. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. Don received a 2nd Commission after attending the Iowa Military Academy. He attended U.S. Army Helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, receiving a designation as an Army Aviator in 1966. Don served in various aviation assignments to include, Commander 248th Aviation Battalion and Director of Army Aviation for the Iowa Army National Guard. He was promoted to Brigadier General upon his retirement after 36 years of Military service. Don loved golfing, fishing and going to Prairie Meadows.
Don is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue Hinman of Ankeny; three children, Duane Hinman of Colo, Dave (Kathy) Hinman of O’Fallon, MO and Teresa (Rich) DeArmond of Ankeny; five grandchildren, Chris Hinman, Emily Hinman, Brandon Hinman, Cheyenne DeArmond and Colt DeArmond; two sisters, Evelyn (Jack) Schauls of St. Louis Park, MN and Elaine Hubby of Boone and his beloved dog, Buffy.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ankeny Funeral Home.
