Born August 27, 1929, to Lawrence and Lola Lein of Ankeny, Dee graduated from Ankeny High School and remained close to her classmates throughout her life. She went on to attend Iowa Lutheran Hospital for nursing training.
On October 8, 1950, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Moss. Together, they built a life centered around family, travel, and community until his passing in 2002. Dee worked at Lutheran Hospital for many years before becoming a beloved school nurse for Ankeny elementary and junior high students. She was known as a kind, generous staff supporter, and her baked goods were highly valued in the staff lounge.
Dee and Bill traveled extensively. Camping almost every weekend was the norm, and the family often tagged along for Bill’s National Guard summer drills. The ’57 Chevy pulling the Shasta trailer, topped with their Alumacraft boat, was a common and joyous sight. They spent cherished time at their family cabin at Iowa Camp on Lake Washburn, Minnesota, took cruises and bus trips with dear friends, and played cards with almost everyone they knew.
Both Dee and Bill were deeply involved in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives, always present for sports, music, social clubs, and adventures. Dee was a proud member of the Ankeny United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and was active in community nursing and charitable causes.
She is survived by her children: Stan Moss (wife Betsy Gibson), Jacque Moss (whose partner, David Carlson, preceded Dee in death), Kevin (Julie) Moss; her grandchildren: Matthew (Andrea) Miller, Jacob (Beth) Moss and Kyle Moss; her great-grandchildren: Calvin, Eleanor, and Alfred Moss, and Jetson Miller; and her cousin-Sis, Marcia Fischer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Lola; her husband, Bill; and her brothers, Lowell and Rodney Lein.
