Gin Han attended Chung Ling High School in Penang, Malaysia. After graduating, he became the first in his family to attend college when he studied civil engineering at the University of Melbourne in Australia. It was in Melbourne that he met Betty Tan, and the two were married in Penang.
Gin Han spent most of his professional career working as a civil engineer for the Asian Development Bank (ADB), primarily stationed at the Bank’s headquarters in Manila, Philippines. Governments across Asia received loans from ADB for major infrastructure development efforts, such as for water, sewage, and flood control, and Gin Han played a crucial role in monitoring these projects to ensure that funds were used effectively and that construction standards were met. His work helped bring clean drinking water to millions in Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and beyond.
Gin Han and Betty raised four children in Manila and provided them with the support needed to pursue advanced education and professional careers in the United States. In 2017, he and his wife joined their children in the U.S. and settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In addition to his wife Betty, Gin Han is survived by his two brothers: Gin San Goh and Khairy Goh, both living with their families in Malaysia; his four children: Meidee Goh and her husband, David Fry, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Ian Goh and his wife, Clara Chu, of Columbia, Maryland; Lindee Goh and her husband, Jerry Carter, of Somerville, Massachusetts; and Ron Goh of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and his four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://www.alz.org.
