Henry Morgan Melvin

He was born August 12, 1934 in Elmira, New York to Samuel Gerard Melvin and Gladys Morgan Melvin. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Staples Melvin and his son Shawn Melvin (Tanya) of Grass Lake, Michigan. Also by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ken and Marianna Staples, nieces Kecia Graham and Tidra Staples and nephew Trevor Staples, 6 grand nieces and nephews and several cousins in New York state. He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece Sloane Elizabeth Staples.

Hank arrived in Milan Michigan as an infant and attended Milan Schools, graduating from Milan High School in 1952 and from Cleary College with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. He worked for King-Seeley for 12 years. Barbara and Hank met when they both worked at King-Seeley in Ann Arbor. They married in 1968. Shawn was born in 1971.

Hank began working for Spartan Electronics in Jackson, Michigan in 1971 and worked there until 1999, in various positions including Controller of Finance and Government Contract Negotiator, spending the 90’s in their DeLeon Springs Florida Division. He traveled to Sparton divisions in Grand Junction, Colorado; London, Ontario; Brownstown, Indiana and Crystal River, Florida.

Hank played football and basketball in high school and college. He was an accomplished bowler winning American Bowling Congress League Team Championships in 1962-63, 1967-68, and 1970-71. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and U of M Football fan.

Hank was an all-around nice guy. A loving husband and father, valued employee and constant friend. . He lived a full life, always trying to do the right thing. He was always there for family members in need. He will be sorely missed.

Services will be held June 3, 1 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church on Huron Street (corner of Arbana) Ann Arbor.

Donations may be made in Hank’s memory to the Salvation Army’s Staples Family Center, the Michael J. Fox Parkinsons Foundation or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
