

Olencki, Irene (nee Babicz), Age 89, passed away peacefully as a result of a series of strokes, surrounded by family, July 24, 2013. Cremation has taken place. Irene was born and raised in Chicago, Ill., where she obtained a BS & MS in Biological Sciences and Education from the University of IL. She taught Science and Biology at the University Laboratory High School and supervised student teachers in Urbana, IL, as well as taught Anatomy, Physiology and Biology at Mundelein College in Chicago, IL. In 1947, Irene married Edward V. Olencki, an architect who trained under Mies van der Rohe. They moved to Ann Arbor in 1948, when Edward began teaching architecture at the University of Michigan, where he became a full Professor. In her first few years in Ann Arbor, Irene taught Science at the University High School and supervised student teachers. For 10 years, while raising her family, Irene was a highly regarded tour guide for professional groups at Parke Davis, later known as Pfizer. For the next 20 years, Irene was a successful residential Realtor, 17 of which were with the Charles Reinhart Co, where she received recognition and awards. For years she was an active participant in the University Wives Club, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, in yoga classes, tai-chi classes, Ichibana classes, as well as the art committee at University Commons where she and Ed moved in 2001. Ed and Irene loved to travel and travel they did. With two sabbaticals for Ed, they traveled extensively throughout Europe. Later, they traveled to Alaska, China, Japan, and the Iberian Peninsula. Irene was always willing to experience something new. She loved life, seeing its wondrous charms, wealth and elegance. Irene was proud of her Polish ancestry and family still in Poland. Irene is survived by her children, Dr. Tom (Becky), Susan (Maj. Anthony, Ret.) Giangiulio , and Barbara Olencki, and her devoted grandchildren, Emily and Thomas Olencki, nieces Nancy (Dr. Theodore) Staahl , Patricia (Bruce) Siegel, nephew Donald (Francesca) Luczak, and grand nieces and nephews Dr. Brett (Carrie) Staahl , Dr. Allyson (Dr. Jason) Drew, Jeffrey Staahl, Kevin Siegel, and Katie Siegel. She is preceded in death by beloved husband of 55years Edward, her parents (Albert George and Sophia Babicz), her sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice Babicz, Estelle (Walter) Gaboda , Felicia (Raymond) Libuse , Lynn (Calvin) Netter . All who were touched by her life were granted the gift of her wisdom, generosity, loving friendship, support, creativity, graciousness, and positive attitude. She is mourned by those who knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held September 19, 2013 at 10 am, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at University Commons in Ann Arbor. Per Irene's wishes, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to St. Vincent De Paul Society in Irene's name, and sent to St. Thomas Church 530 Elizabeth St. Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104-1222.
