Born on September 28, 1939, in Eldora, Iowa, Jane grew up in this small town, where she attended Eldora Elementary and High School, proudly graduating as a Tiger. After high school, she attended the University of Iowa, earning her bachelor’s degree in General Science in 1961. Jane's academic journey continued at the University of Michigan, where she obtained her Master’s degree in Hospital Administration in 1976.
In her professional life, Jane excelled as a Hospital Administrator, most notably at Beyer Hospital and Seaway Hospital, having a successful career in a field that was traditionally dominated by men.
Jane’s impact extended outside of her career as well. She was a passionate volunteer and community member, serving as a Girl Scout Leader and holding various roles at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, where she had been a loyal member for over 50 years. She particularly enjoyed singing in the choir and contributing her time to the church’s committees and financial department. Additionally, Jane also served on the Alzheimer’s Association for several years. Alongside her professional and volunteer work, Jane pursued part-time modeling and acting, appearing in several local commercial shoots.
Jane’s involvement in Pi Beta Phi was also an important part of her life, starting at the University of Iowa, where she not only embraced the sisterhood but also served as president for a year. She took pride in leading and supporting her sisters, always working to create a strong, close bond between them. Even after moving to Michigan, Jane continued her connection to Pi Beta Phi, this time with the University of Michigan chapter.
A lover of golf, Jane was an active member of the Ann Arbor Women’s Golf Association, where she not only played in the league but also served on the board. She shared her passion for golf with her daughter, Brette, and the two enjoyed playing together for many years. Throughout her life, Jane remained committed to staying active and healthy—whether jogging, jumping rope, playing tennis, swimming, or simply staying on the go.
Traveling was another of Jane’s great joys, whether returning to her hometown in Iowa, visiting the beach with her family, or enjoying time at her beloved home on Portage Lake, where she took boat rides, but preferred jumping on her sea-doo to enjoy a fast but relaxing joy ride.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Conlen; her parents, Dr. Raymond R. Griffel and Ann Griffel; and her sister, Annie Portz.
She is survived by her children: James G. Bradbury (Maryanne), David R. Bradbury Jr. (Ruthy), and Brette Bradbury (Jackie); her sisters, Kay Griffel (partner Sherry) and Rae Hershey; as well as her beloved stepchildren from the McCormick and Conlen families, whom she cherished deeply.
Jane will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering positive attitude. One of her greatest joys was singing, and she loved bringing her family together to sing, especially at Christmas. It was her way of making the holidays feel extra special, with everyone joining in and creating memories that will last a lifetime. She was a woman who dedicated her life to helping others, whether through her career, her volunteer work, or the love and support she gave to her family. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
May Jane rest in peace, knowing she made a lasting impact on the lives of all who were fortunate to know her.
