

Jewel “Jeff” Hunter passed away on Sunday, September 23. She was born October 14, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Pauline Thomas Freeman Eakins and Conrad Freeman. She was married to John C. Hunter for 47 years before he passed away in 1993. Mrs. Hunter, who was known as Muzzy to the younger set, graduated from Vassar College in 1946 with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics. She came west for a visit with her classmate Angela Dobson Welch, who spoke so fondly of Ann Arbor, and then she met Angela’s family friend John Hunter during her visit to the city that soon became her lifetime home.
She and John lived in Phoenix and England with their daughter Connie during the Korean War where the family was introduced to fox hunting, which became a life passion upon their return to Ann Arbor at Waterloo Hunt Club.
Jeff belonged to Ann Arbor Farm & Garden, Ann Arbor City Club and was past president of the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop. She loved playing golf at Ann Arbor Golf & Outing and other area venues with her close friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband John C. Hunter and her beloved son John C. Hunter Jr.
Mrs. Hunter is survived by her daughter Constance Hunter Belda (John), granddaughter Lauren Belda Contursi (Michael) and great granddaughter Bella Contursi of Laguna Beach, California, her cousin Tom Thomas, with whom she was raised as his sister, and a host of wonderful friends. Visitation will be Thursday, September 27 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. There will be a private burial service at Botsford Cemetery followed by a memorial service that will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1432 Washtenaw Avenue at 11:30 AM on Friday, September 28. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation 301 North Main Street, Suite 300, Ann Arbor 48105 (Attn. Jewel F. Hunter Memorial Fund) or the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop, 3530 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor 48104 would be welcomed by the family.
