

Kathryn Klintworth (nee Kunkel) left this life to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, October 29, 2016. She was born June 2, 1938 in Minneapolis, MN to Otto and Lillian Kunkel. On June 10, 1967 she married Philip Klintworth, of Oak Park, IL, in Honolulu, HI.
During a life-long career as a teacher, Kathryn taught every grade from second grade through university. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, (now Concordia University Chicago), a Master of Arts degree from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. For more than twenty years she was a faculty member at Concordia University Ann Arbor. Subsequent to retirement she served as a volunteer for Washtenaw Literacy, teaching English as a Second Language.
Kathryn was also a Navy Wife, the toughest job in the Navy. She ably assisted her husband throughout his career, moving nine times and raising a family with a husband often away at sea. In addition, she often was tasked, as the “Captain’s Wife,” to look after the families of crewmembers when the ship was at sea.
As a musician, Kathryn sang professionally in Hawaii, and directed church choirs, brass ensembles, and bell choirs in the communities where she and her husband were stationed.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, her children Mark Klintworth (Nancy) of Ewa Beach, HI, and Paul Klintworth (Takako) of Glendale, CA, grandchildren Tenaya, Elijah, Noah, and Micah, sisters Naomi Peterson and Joyce Kunkel of Minneapolis, MN, brother Edward Kunkel of Apple Valley, MN, sister-in-law Lois Seijo (José) of Lombard, IL, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Visitation will be at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S 4th Ave, Ann Arbor, MI on Thursday November 10, 2016 from 3 pm to 5 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. The funeral service will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, MI at noon on Friday, November 11, 2016. Interment will be in San Diego, CA, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Michigan Cancer Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church, or the University Musical Society.
