

Mamie L. Crawford was born on February 6th, 1930 in Newellton, Louisiana to the late Richard Anderson Jones and Emily Bellows Jones on their Green Oaks Farm in Tensas Parish. She departed this life on Tuesday, June 13th, 2017 at Arbor Hospice in the comforting care of her family and loved ones. Preceding her in death were sisters: Martha Jones, Leola Jackson, Eunice Thomas and Bessie A. Jones; brothers: Walter Jones, Otha Lynch, William Jones and Richard Jones.
Mamie attended Tensas Rosenwald High School in St. Joseph, LA. where she graduated. Soon after graduation, she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1950. She joined Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor Michigan under the leadership of Reverend C.W. Carpenter where she was a member for 67 years. Mamie was an active participant of Pastor’s Aid Auxiliary and Council Committee for Seasoned Saints Ministry.
Mamie attended Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for many years as a licensed practical nurse. She was employed 30 years at the University of Michigan Dental School as a supervisor of Children’s Dentistry. Mamie retired from the University of Michigan in 1994. Mamie loved U of M football and attended games regularly. Mamie also loved all sports, puzzles, her family and the Elks.
Mamie was a life member of Daisy Chain Temple #212 Elks, I.B.P.O.E. of W. She held the following offices with the Elks organization: Escort, Assistant Financial Secretary, Vice-daughter Ruler and was elected Treasurer of her temple in 2006. Mamie was also a member of Monamus/Gray Education and the Hayden/Jackson Shrine Departments. She served as a member of the State of Michigan Elks Past Daughter Rulers Council and the Past State Presidents Club. Mamie was a loyal financial secretary for many years as well as the Elks nominations election and budget committee. She received her Elks Grand Temple honors in Washington, D.C. in 1982. In 2011, Mamie was awarded and honored at the Elks State of Michigan convention as “Elk of the Year”. She also retired in 2011, as Treasurer for the Elks Tri-City Past Grand Circle where she served as the State Association Treasurer for 21 years.
In 1981, Mamie married the late James (Jim) Crawford, Exalted Ruler of Elks Pratt Lodge #322. James L. Crawford passed away in 2003, after which the lodge was named in his honor, James L. Crawford Lodge #322, located at 220 Sunset St. in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Mamie leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Moffitt, Ann Arbor, Michigan, two grand-daughters, Carmel Renada and Sinclair Monet. One great-grandson, Xavier Alan Evans, Houston Texas. Mamie is survived by her sisters; Elizabeth Moses, Newellton, Louisiana and Charity Wright, Compton, California. Also survived by nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 23rd, 2017, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24th, 2017 at Second Baptist Church, 850 Red Oak Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow service at United Memorial Gardens.
