Born on January 27, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Phoebe spent her early years immersed in the cultural and intellectual life of the city. A 1959 graduate of Roxborough High School, she later earned both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Library and Information Science from Drexel University, followed by a Master’s in Literature from New York University.
In 1971, Phoebe moved to San Francisco with her two young daughters, beginning a new chapter in a city that would become her spiritual home. There, she built a life grounded in curiosity, creativity, and community. Her distinguished career as a special collections librarian included roles at notable institutions such as the Sierra Club, Bank of America, Tularik, and Amgen Biotechnology. While at the Sierra Club, she played an instrumental role in envisioning and developing the Wallace Stegner Center at the San Francisco Public Library, reflecting her deep commitment to environmental preservation and cultural heritage.
Phoebe’s love of books extended far beyond the professional realm. She was an avid reader, a discerning collector of rare and unusual volumes, and a passionate advocate for the literary arts. She practiced Iyengar yoga with discipline and joy, eventually earning her teaching certification and sharing her practice with others. Her friendships often blossomed through shared passions, and over the years, she developed lasting bonds with writers, artists, Underground cartoonists, and other creative minds.
In 2012, Phoebe relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she quickly became a beloved presence in the local arts community. She volunteered as a film screener for the Ann Arbor Film Festival, served as a docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and tutored adults at the Washtenaw Literacy Center. Whether deep in conversation, strolling through the woods with her dogs, or immersed in a film or exhibition, Phoebe brought warmth, insight, and wit to every encounter.
She will be remembered for her sharp intellect, irrepressible humor, generous spirit, and tenacious will. Phoebe lived with boldness and grace, meeting each chapter of life with curiosity and courage.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy Jones; her daughters, Phoebe Gloeckner and Lise Cheney; her grandchildren, Audrey “Fina” Gloeckner-Kalousek, Persephone Gloeckner Suits, Karl Cheney, Alexandra Cheney, and Arthur Cheney; and her six great-grandchildren.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of the many friends who surrounded Phoebe with love and care in her final days, far too numerous to mention here. Special gratitude goes to David Breher—devoted friend and fellow dog lover—who has welcomed her cherished companion, Rudy, into his home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phoebe’s memory to the Huron Valley Humane Society, a cause dear to her heart.
